As a Founding Member of Students Against Child Marriage, I worked as Communications Director to educate and promote actions to end child marriage in the United States. Prior to my decision to leave the organization, my team had gained nearly 10,000 followers in only 8 months. We managed to receive support from dozens of influencers and celebrities, invigorating young people to join the fight to end child marriage.

My time at Students Against Child Marriage was spent managing the Communications team, which was made up of a dozen volunteers within three departments: Blog, Social Media Management, and the artists. I ran the Instagram from July of 2020 to March of 2021, and advised the management of our Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. I worked side by side with our artists as we created half a dozen pieces, if not more, each week. I advised the management of our blog team, guiding the conversations each blog contributor was having with their readers. As a team, we were focused on accessible education, and ensured that we were using elementary level language, so that anyone could learn about United States child marriage. On an executive level, I was responsible for the design of our organizations website and brand. I worked as a founding member to develop the mission and values of Students Against Child Marriage, guiding the execution of this mission through my artwork.

ORIGINAL WORKS

Social Media was the first team I worked to develop as a founder of our nonprofit. I brought together a team of artist, and together we created a brand admired internationally. My role changed over time, but from the very beginning, we worked together to create art that mattered. I worked on my own content, while simultaneously guiding their content creation. Each week, four artists would create 1-3 pieces, and together we would review their work and I would provide feedback. Here are some highlights.

ADVISED CONTENT

As Director of Communications, I worked to ensure that our team was putting out a cohesive collection of content. In August of 2020, I created a branding package that fit our team. Through trial and error over the course of a few weeks, I was able to understand what the mission of our team was and how the collection of volunteer artists was most capable of fulfilling those ideas. Together, we took a vow to not exploit the imagery of child brides to promote our message. Our work is intended to educate, not re-traumatize. Here are some pieces from my process.

BRANDING

This art has reached hundreds of thousands of consumers of media. We have educated on United States child marriage in a manor that attracted nearly 10,000 active supporters of our mission. There is so much power in youth movements, and my time as Director of Communications proves that. Students Against Child Marriage will forever hold a special place in my heart. We are stronger together, and we are stronger when powered by art.
